Karnak Temple Visitor Guide
How to explore the largest temple complex ever built, from the Hypostyle Hall to the sacred lake.
Karnak is not one temple but a sprawling complex built and rebuilt across two thousand years. Knowing what to look for turns a big, hot site into an unforgettable walk through history.
Start at the Avenue of Sphinxes
Enter along the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes toward the first great pylon. This was the ceremonial approach used in ancient processions.
The Great Hypostyle Hall
The heart of Karnak is its hall of 134 giant columns, some still carrying traces of their original paint high overhead. It is one of the most photographed spaces in Egypt for good reason.
Don't miss
- The standing obelisk of Hatshepsut, one of the tallest in Egypt.
- The sacred lake, where priests once purified themselves.
- The scarab statue near the lake, said to bring luck.
When to go
Come early to beat the heat, or in the late afternoon. An evening sound and light show offers a completely different way to experience the temple.
